Under the “Settings” menu, you will find “All in One SEO”. These are the settings for the plugin known as the “All in One SEO Pack”. The purpose of this plugin is to help you easily edit the information that search engines need to see to know what a page is about. This is known as page’s “meta information“.
There is a lot of strategy that goes into determining what phrase might work best for this and that is enough for a book in itself. But this info is easy to change using the “All in One SEO Pack” plugin.
EDITING THE META INFORMATION FOR THE HOME PAGE
Log into your site. Look under the “Settings” menu for “All in One SEO”. You will see 3 main areas that can be edited: “Home Title”, “Home Description”, and “Home Keywords”.
The “Home Title” should be a phrase of about 8-10 words at the most that represents the main term you want to be found for in search results. It is a good idea to include a location, and a specific industry related term. For example, you might use “Los Angeles Portrait Photographer”. You don’t want to use your studio name unless you include it AFTER a phrase like that and definitely not by itself. So instead of “My Portait Studio” you might do “Los Angeles Portrait Photography – My Studio Name”.
The Description should be one to two sentences that spell out a similar idea as the title but you have some room to go into more detail and add some other keywords. This is generally used as the little blurb that shows up in search results under the title. So you want it to be something that reads well as a quick description and sales pitch for your site.
The keywords section is completely ignored by Google, so is not very important but you might as well fill it out while you are there. The keywords should be a list of maybe up to 20 words or two to three word phrases separated by commas.
Just like they sound, these areas only effect the home page.
EDITING META INFORMATION ON INTERIOR PAGES
You will also want each page to have the Title and Description be something relavant to that page. Ideally every page is unique and should have unique Title and Description. That sounds like a lot of work, but the plugin does a lot of the work without you needing to think about it too much.
If you don’t do anything with each page, the Title becomes the title of the page and the Description becomes an excerpt from the content of the page. All the interior pages and posts also have a spot to edit these fields as you create or edit that page. If you want, you can manually add whatever you want to those areas. However, the title of the post or page itself is also important, so the easiest way to do this is simply to title the post with something relavant.
For example if you are posting a family portrait session that you shot on location, use that in the title. Instead of “The Davis Family” as a title you would use something like “Family Portrait Session in Central Park, NY”.
If the content of your page is all images or does not contain any of those important keywords, you may want to add a more informative description. If the content of the page reads pretty well and includes those keywords, you can just leave that alone and the first couple sentences of the post will become the description.
