There are several ways to include video on your site. Any post or page will take embedded video from YouTube, Vimeo or other sites.
But there are a few options for how to display it:
Place a video anywhere within the main content area of a page or post
Allow the video to take up the entire content area
1) WITHIN THE MAIN CONTENT AREA
You can also include video and other embeddable media anywhere within the main content area of any page or post.
All you need is the URL of the page the video is on.
You then use the embed shortcode wherever you want the video to appear.
To see it working, here is a video of one of the wrinkliest faced puppies ever, using the code below:
You can also play with the width and height:
embed width="300" height="200"]URL_OF_VIDEO[/embed]
It does not match the numbers exact. It uses the numbers as maximums. So at the most, it would be 300px wide, or at most 200px high.
The full list of supported video sites:
- Flickr (both videos and images)
- Google Video
- WordPress.tv (only VideoPress-type videos for the time being)
- SmugMug (WordPress 3.0+)
- FunnyOrDie.com (WordPress 3.0+)
Note for SmugMug users:
SmugMug is in the approved list of embeddable video providers, but for now you need to use your 'name.smugmug.com' subdomain. It will not work with a custom domain.
If your Video URl looks like this:
You want to use
All smugmug accounts started as a 'name.smugmug.com' before you added a custom domain. You can find by looking in "Control Panel->Settings". Look for your "Nickname".
For a full explanation, you can see the WordPress page on using the embed features.
Other options for pages
2) TO THE SIDE OF THE MAIN CONTENT
To add a small video to the side of the page, similar to the way a thumbnail image would display, use the Optional Page Content section. As you edit a page, look under the main content editor for Optional Page Content. Paste your embed code into the middle one, Optional Page Video. If you also have a thumbnail (or Featured Image) on the page, the video will display below it.
3) ALLOW VIDEO TO BE THE ENTIRE PAGE
If you would like a large video to be the only thing on the page, the easiest way to do this is to paste the embed code into the third section of the Optional Page Content area, Optional Full Page Video. If there is anything in there, the normal content areas will not be shown to visitors and only this video will be shown.
You should customize the embed code before copying it to make sure it is a size that will fill the screen. The width of the content areas vary on each site, but somewhere between 900 and 1000px wide should fit.
